About: The MBSR 8-week mindfulness program was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the Center for Mindfulness, University of Massachusetts Medical School, USA. It is an evidence-based program that is subject to international scientific standards and has a positive effect on the management of symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression in sick and healthy people. The method is used to work with mindfulness – to relate to the thoughts and feelings that arise with loving and accepting attention, even if they are thoughts you don’t really want to have. This way, you can train yourself to be fully present in the moment while working on your reaction patterns and habitual thinking. (The MBSR program includes meditation techniques and yoga exercises without a religious context.)
Meditation
Meditation, mindfulness, does not mean emptying your mind of thoughts. In meditation, you feel what is; all thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations are allowed – there is nothing that can be wrong, just as you can’t be bad at meditation. If your mind wanders, you notice it and try to bring it back to your breathing. If you’re filled with negative or judgmental thoughts, or if you feel restless or bored, that’s what you’ll notice. A key part of the program is the body scan, where you are guided through feeling your entire body, increasing your body awareness and learning to feel how you really feel.
Yoga
Mindfulness yoga is an exercise that uses breathing and awareness to concentratedly feel your body. You learn to respect your body’s limits and release muscle tension. It’s agility, balance and strength training all in one. You also try to explore and accept thoughts and feelings such as frustration with what your body can’t do or your tendency to push your body too much. Regular exercise increases strength and flexibility.
Teaching
An important point of the program is that it unfolds together with others. The course differs from regular yoga and meditation in that during the course, either in plenary or in pairs, you talk about how the meditation, homework or yoga exercises went, and there are various communication exercises along the way. This helps individuals realize that they are not alone in feeling pain, boredom, shame or anxiety.
